Window Snapping & Moving

Window snapping is a really powerful feature in BetterTouchTool. It lets you quickly arrange the windows on your Mac, for example with your mouse, trackpad gestures or keyboard shortcuts. For a quick introduction, watch the video below:

Basic Window Snapping Setup

You can turn window snapping on or off with Enable window snapping in Settings → Window Snapping & Moving → Snapping. It's enabled by default, except for fresh installs on macOS 15 or newer, which has its own window tiling. On those systems, you can enable it during onboarding or in the settings. The settings also let you customize lots of other things:

Basic Usage

Window snapping is easy to use. Drag a window to the side of the screen where you want it to snap. For example, to make a window take up the left half of the screen, drag it to the left until your cursor touches the left edge of the screen. When the expanding box appears, release the window and it fills the left half.

By default, a snapping menu appears when you drag a window and the mouse cursor reaches a screen edge or corner. Keep holding the window and pause briefly, then move along the edge to pick another layout and release to apply it. The menu can also offer to fill the space up to a neighboring window.

To restore the window's original size, drag it away from the snapped position. It's resized automatically.

You can drag windows to these areas:

  • The left/right side of the screen to make the window take up the left/right half
  • Any of the four corners of the screen to make the window take up a quarter of the screen in that corner
  • The top of the screen to maximize the window
