Basic Preferences Overview

This section gives you an overview of the BetterTouchTool configuration. The window in the screenshot below is where you configure almost every BetterTouchTool feature (and there are many 😉).

Let's go through the different parts of the window:

preferences

App List

You can assign actions either globally to all apps or to a specific app. By default the App List contains For All Apps, Recently Used (your most recently used triggers), Trash (recently deleted triggers) and Finder.

You can add as many other apps as you like: click the âž• button at the bottom left of the list, or drag an app from Finder onto the list. To remove an app, press the trash button.

The trash button deletes the app together with all gestures / triggers you've set up for it.

Trigger List

BetterTouchTool supports many types of triggers. Choose the trigger type with the popup in the top bar or with the row of icons below it.

You can choose from:

Action List

The action list shows all actions assigned to the selected trigger. When the trigger fires, they run one after another, so it's easy to chain multiple actions. Use Add First Action (or the + button) to add an action.

Actions can be keyboard shortcuts, scripts or any of BetterTouchTool's predefined actions.

Configuration Side Bar

The Configuration Side Bar on the right side of the window is where almost all configuration happens.

It adapts to whatever you select: select a trigger and it shows that trigger's options; select an action or an app and it shows the options for those.

In this example a Touch Bar Date / Time widget is selected. It has widget-specific options (here the date format) and common options like colors, title and icons in the Common tab: config

You can also undock the sidebar with the undock icon at the top right (or via View => Undock Configuration).
